Beta Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive disorder. There is a 25% chance of the newborn being affected with beta thalassemia major, if both parents have beta thalassemia trait. This chance is present in each pregnancy. Hence, in such a couple, it is essential, that every pregnancy gets tested to rule out beta thalassemia major. We offer prenatal testing to couples before 20 weeks of pregnancy at the centre. This test is also offered for other genetic blood disorders if feasible.
