Thalassemia Day Care Services

Thalassemia Day Care is 16-bedded facility for 125 registered patients with Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia (TDT) who need lifelong regular blood transfusion at 3-4 weekly intervals. Transfusions are given under the supervision of trained doctors and nurses.

Timings of Day care Services: 8 am to 6 pm (Monday to Saturday)

Reporting time for patient: 8 am

Every patient has to be accompanied by one attendant.

During each visit patient is evaluated and samples are collected for grouping- cross matching and also for recommended investigations at periodic intervals. Patients are transfused with cross matched packed red cells through leucofilters.

All registered patients also receive comprehensive care and are evaluated by

  • Counselor
  • Physiotherapist
  • Ophthalmologist
  • Audiologist
  • Endocrinologist
  • Dietician
  • Cardiologist

Patients are monitored for

  • Growth and development
  • Liver and kidney function every month
  • Iron overload in terms of ferritin and MRI scan annually (if more than 7 years of age)
  • Bone health (DEXA scan) annually if more than 10 years of age
  • Transfusion transmitted infections annually
  • Cardiac functioning (2D Echo) annually

Patient and family education and motivational activities are conducted to ensure these children lead a good quality of life.
