About Us

MCGM – Comprehensive Thalassemia Care, Pediatric Hematology-Oncology & BMT Centre was established on 1st April 2017. It is one of its kind stand-alone Superspeciality Centre in public sector. It is a satellite centre of LTM Medical College & General Hospital, Sion, Mumbai.

Cancers in children in India are on the rise. And children with cancers require specialized medical care with adequate facilities and expertise. However, unfortunately, there are very few “State-of-the-Art” Pediatric Cancer Units (PCUs) in the city and state, & hardly any in public sector. Thus, there was a felt need for such a centre which could cater to children with cancers in the outdoor, indoor and Day Care Chemotherapy unit. Additionally, all the Pediartic Cancer facilities are located in South and Central Mumbai with none in the western suburbs. Many parents struggle to take their children suffering from cancers to far-off hospitals in the city, thus adding to their agony. Also, it was felt that more Day Care Chemotherapy beds created in our centre will help decongest the already high-volume hospitals in the city.

Thalassemia is another significantly neglected disorder in our country. Thalassemia is a Red Blood Cell Disorder, which is genetically acquired and requires lifelong transfusion therapy besides medications to remove excess iron from the body. Despite removal of iron with these medications, they develop organ damage due to iron deposition requiring regular monitoring and intervention through comprehensive care. However, there are no comprehensive care centres catrering to thalassemia. Also, despite the fact that thalassemia is curable with Bone Marrow Transplant, the procedure is not available in large number of patients in the public sector due to lack of the necessary infrastructure and expertise.

This, Centre was thus started to provide Comprehensive Care to children and adults with Thalassemia, high quality care to children with other blood disorders & cancers as well as bone marrow transplant services at minimal or no cost to non-affording patients.

Every child deserves quality care. Children with chronic diseases of the blood as well as those with cancers deserve a clean, pleasant & child friendly environment in the hospital, with all amenities available even for non-affording children. Our centre aims to offer Bone Marrow Transplantation – A curative option for several blood disorders and Cancers, at nominal cost or free of cost to non-affording patients.
